The Rotaract Club of Montebello kicked off March with enthusiasm, actively participating in the #RotaHealth National Project to raise awareness about Leukemia in children.
We had the honor of welcoming Dr. Vanisha Chummun, medical oncologist and specialist in solid and hematological malignancies, for an insightful session on Leukemia—its types, symptoms, and treatments.

Dr. Vanisha captivated the audience, explaining how Leukemia originates in blood cells and the bone marrow, causing a significant drop in red blood cells and platelets, which impacts oxygen transport and infection resistance.

As the session progressed, we explored different Leukemia types, which, unlike solid cancers, are categorized as acute or chronic rather than staged. Dr. Vanisha also introduced Lymphoma, another liquid cancer affecting white blood cells.
She discussed various risk factors, noting that while certain habits increase the likelihood, cancer can still occur without them.

A key takeaway was recognizing symptoms early. This sparked a lively discussion, with many attendees asking questions to deepen their understanding.
A simple diagram summarized the most common symptoms, ensuring members could easily remember and share this vital knowledge.

Dr. Vanisha further elaborated on diagnosis, treatment options, and advancements in medicine. A dynamic Q&A session followed, allowing attendees to engage with her expertise.
She also stressed the importance of psychological support for both patients and families.

We extend our gratitude to the Interact Club of Montebello, parents, ADRR Kimberly for their presence, and DO Leena for her constant support and guidance.
A special thanks to Dr. Vanisha for this engaging and informative session, and to Rotaractor Alex for his contribution in making this session a success.
